Sunday, June 18th, 2017 @ 5:30 pm, a new mystical dance-drama by the name of The Heron & the Fish (by artist in Residence Evan Silver) will take to the stage in what has been promised to be a beautiful new twist of theatre on the island.
The Heron & the Fish is a contemporary theatrical adaptation based on the folk tale from Central Java. The story follows a harebrained tyrant who stirs up fraudulent fantasies and age-old resentments against the outliers among us, it’s no mystery why this tale resonates so profoundly across borders. In times like these, it’s more importan than ever to tell stories that help us resist our basest tendencies to give into the fears and resentments that divide and destroy us.
The old folk tale will be brought to life by a dynamic ensemble of artists. it stars Anwari (Madura), Willy Heramus (Borneo), Sandrayati Fay (Philippines) and the children of Batuan village (Bali). The show also features puppets designed by Marmar Herayukti (Bali), a mask carved by the director (United States), and live music performed by Agustian Supriatna (Lampung), Rizal Abdulhadi (West Java), and Budali (Madura). The show is stage managed by Nuy Darmadjaja (Jakarta).
Special opening Rangda Dance by Gung Tut.
Performances will take place in the Wantilan Water Garden at the ARMA Resort (Ubud) as part of their ARMA Cultural xChange Program. Audience members are invited to join for conversation after each performance. Payments are based on donation (suggested: Rp.50,000)

More about the team:
Evan Silver has been living in Bali for 10 months on a Henry Luce Scholarship with artist residencies at Rumah Sanur Creative Hub and the Bali Purnati Center for the Arts. A recent graduate of Brown University with additional training from Drama Centre London, the Yale School of Drama, and Steppenwolf Theatre Company, his multidisciplinary work explores themes of human constancy and variation across time and place, largely drawing inspiration from folklore and mythology. While in Bali, he has studied traditional Balinese performing arts, including topeng masked dance with I Gusti Ngurah Windia (Carangsari), mask-carving with Ida Bagus Alit (Lodtunduh), and wayang kulit shadow puppetry with I Wayan Wija (Peliatan).
