The play uses dance music and song to show how Indonesia’s Spice Islands changed the history of global economics when the 1667 Treaty of Breda formalized the Dutch atreement to trade Manhattan to the English in exchange for Pulau Rhun, now part of Indonesia’s Banda Archipelago. This event will be performed on Indonesia’s Independence Day to Commemorate the 350th Anniversary of the Treaty that helped the Dutch colonize Indonesia. The play’s climax includes Sukarno’s 1945 Proclamation of Freedom.
With the support of the Asian Cultural Council, the Mellon Foundation, and the Davis Education Fund, the play was first presented in the United States at Wesleyan University and the Indonesian Consulate of New York where it was featured on BBC Radio, National Public Radio, and other media outlets in coverage that can be found at the website: islands.site.wesleyan.edu
